How to Give User Access to Google Analytics

Is there a new employee, consultant, or agency you need to give Google Analytics access to?

If you’re working with someone new, it’s much safer to create new user access for them. We never recommend giving out your e-mail login credentials.

Luckily, Google makes it easy to give access to new users. They can log in with their own Google e-mail address to log in to your Google Analytics account. This guide is going to show you how to add a user to Google Analytics and give them access to your account.

Prerequisites: You’ll need two things for this guide to work.

1. The person you’re giving access to must have a Google-associated e-mail address, such as a Gmail account.

2. An existing Google Analytics account. If you need to set up a new Google Analytics account, you’ll need to follow another guide for that. This guide is for giving another user access to an existing Google Analytics account.

The following steps will walk you through the process:

Step 1: Sign in to Google Analytics

Go to google.com/analytics to reach the Google Analytics homepage. Click “Sign in to Google Analytics” and log in to your account.

Step 2: Choose the right Google Analytics Account

If you only have one Google Analytics account, then you should be set.

If you have multiple accounts, make sure you’re in the right one. You can choose different accounts in the top left corner, just to the right of the Analytics logo. From the dropdown, choose the correct Account, then Property, then View.

Step 3: Give Access

Now that you’ve chosen the account you want to provide access to, click Admin with the gear icon in the bottom left corner.

Under the Admin column, click Account Access Management. This should open Account Permissions. (If it doesn’t, you don’t have the permissions to Manage Users.)

From here, click the blue + Plus icon in the top right corner. Click Add users.

Enter the e-mail address of the user you want to give access to.

Under the e-mail address, check off the boxes for the permissions you want to give. The permissions include:

  • Edit - Can create and edit properties, views, filters, goals, etc. Cannot manage users.

  • Collaborate - Can create and edit shared assets, like dashboards or annotations.

  • Read & Analyze - Can view report and configuration data.

  • Manage Users - Can add users, delete users, and change user permissions.

You can check off multiple permissions for each user. Make sure when you check off Manage Users that you want to give these permissions out. This user will be able to add or delete users on your Google Analytics account. Only give this out if absolutely necessary.

Once you choose the permissions, click the blue Add button in the top right corner, and you should be all set! Let the user know they now have access and can log in using their e-mail address. If you have questions, let us know in the comments below.
